Sass is one of those Melbourne labels you have probably met before without quite registering the name: on a rail in a suburban boutique, on a friend at a long lunch, in a wedding photo where the guest looked comfortable as well as dressed up. The brand designs and sells from Melbourne under the Sass Collective banner, and its strength is the kind of dress you actually wear. Shapes are relaxed but considered, prints are its own, and the detailing tends to sit in one place: a twist at the waist, a ruffle across the body, a keyhole at the back.
We’ve been looking closely at the current Sass Clothing range and pulled together eight pieces that show it at its best. Six are dresses, from occasion maxis to a denim midi you’ll wear on repeat, and two are jackets that do the heavy lifting once the evenings cool. Full prices in this edit run from $129.95 to $199.95, with a couple of pieces marked down at the time of writing.
The Steph Halter Neck Dress: The Occasion Maxi
If you only look at one Sass piece this season, make it the Steph. The high halter neckline is gathered so the fabric falls in soft folds from the collarbone, and the sheer outer layer floats over a viscose-blend lining rather than clinging to it. The fit is relaxed, so it moves well across a long afternoon. In the polka dot colourway it reads playful without tipping into costume, which makes it a strong pick for spring racing, a garden wedding or a Christmas party where you would rather not wear black.
Keep the neckline clean: no necklace, hair up or tucked back, and let a slim strappy sandal or a block heel do the rest. The Steph Halter Neck Dress is the most expensive piece in our edit at $199.95, and it’s the one that looks it.
The Nicola Layered Dress: Butter Yellow, Done Softly
Butter yellow has been everywhere this year, and the Nicola is one of the more wearable takes on it. It’s a halter maxi built from tiered frill layers, cut in a flared A-line that swings as you walk. The outer is a viscose and nylon blend with a soft cotton lining, which means it breathes better than most occasion dresses at this price.
Yellow can wash out some skin tones close to the face, so the halter neckline helps by leaving the shoulders bare. Gold jewellery, a tan or natural raffia bag and a flat sandal turn the Nicola Layered Dress into a summer daytime wedding look. Swap to a heel and a structured clutch for the evening.
The Reo Peplum Maxi Dress: Sass in Its Own Print
The Wayfarer print is exclusive to Sass, and the Reo Peplum Maxi is the most generous way to wear it. It’s a slip-on shape with a peplum at the waist that adds definition without zips or ties, and a keyhole opening at the back gives a small, unexpected detail. Crucially, it’s 100% cotton with a cotton lining, so it suits hot days far better than synthetic prints.
This is a holiday dress that also works at home: a weekend market, a beach lunch, a barbecue that runs late. Add a denim jacket or the Thalia blazer further down when the wind picks up. At the time of writing the Reo is marked down from $129.95 to $90.00, which makes it the easiest entry point into the label.
The Kinny Stripe One Shoulder Dress: A Classic Stripe With an Edge
Blue and white stripe is about as traditional as summer dressing gets. The Kinny makes it feel current with two moves: an asymmetric one-shoulder neckline and a front split that adds movement to the maxi length. The polyester and cotton blend holds the stripe crisply and travels well, which is worth knowing if you’re packing for a coastal weekend.
Treat the Kinny Stripe as your nautical-but-not-literal dress. White sneakers keep it casual, a woven wedge dresses it up, and a single bold earring on the bare side balances the asymmetric line.
The Zendeya Twist Midi Dress: The Everyday Print
Not every good dress needs an occasion. The Zendeya is a relaxed midi in a bandana print, with a V neckline, short sleeves and a twist detail that gives shape at the front without a waistband. It’s cut in 100% viscose, a fluid fabric that drapes softly and feels cool against the skin.
This is the piece for days when you want to look put together with almost no thought: sneakers and a tote for errands, a leather sandal and sunglasses for lunch. The Zendeya Twist Midi Dress also layers well under a fine knit cardigan as the weather turns.
The Kara Denim Midi Dress: Denim That Works Every Season
A good denim dress earns its place by being wearable in almost any weather, and the Kara is designed that way. It has a collared neckline, a button-through front and seam detailing that lifts it beyond a plain shirt dress. The fabric is a cotton and lyocell blend in a mid-wash 90’s Blue, softer and with more drape than rigid denim.
In summer, wear the Kara Denim Midi open over a slip or with sandals and a straw bag. In winter, add tights, a knee boot and the Sammie bomber below. It’s the most versatile dress in this edit, at $149.95.
The Thalia Belted Blazer: Tailoring With a Waist
The Thalia is where Sass shows it can tailor. A self-fabric belt with a brass D-ring defines the waist, welt pockets keep the front sleek, and a back vent lets it move. It’s cut from a viscose and wool blend in a chocolate birdseye weave and lined in cotton, a combination that gives structure without the stiffness of a heavier suiting cloth.
Belt it over a slip dress for dinner, or wear it open with straight jeans and a white tee. The chocolate tone sits beautifully over the Reo print and the Kara denim. The Thalia Belted Blazer is down from $139.95 to $98.00 at the time of writing.
The Sammie Bomber Jacket: The Throw-On Layer
Our second jacket is the more relaxed of the two. The Sammie is an oversized bomber in 100% cotton with a camel check, a high funnel neckline and concealed front fastenings, finished with an elasticated hem and cuffs. Cotton keeps it breathable, so it works on those spring mornings that start cold and finish warm.
The Sammie Bomber Jacket is the easiest way to make a dress feel off-duty. Throw it over the Zendeya or the Kara with sneakers, or wear it with a knit and wide-leg trousers. At $159.95 it’s a layer you’ll reach for well beyond one season.
How to Wear Sass
What ties these pieces together is ease. Sass designs dresses that do most of the work on their own, so styling is mostly about restraint: one statement detail, simple accessories and a jacket that matches the mood. Pair the prints with the chocolate blazer for contrast, put the camel bomber over denim and stripes, and save the Steph and Nicola for the days that call for something more.
